Panthers Find Your Passion Day Inspires Student Interests and Community Connections
I strive to help students see themselves in a positive light and realize that each and every one of them has something special to offer this world. - Ms. Nicky Sayre, School Counselor
Students at Parkside Elementary were all smiles during the school’s first-ever Panthers Find Your Passion Day on May 23, a special event designed to help students discover new interests and connect with opportunities beyond the classroom.
Part of the school’s Leader in Me initiative, the event welcomed more than a dozen local organizations representing fields such as sports, arts, volunteerism, music, scouting, and more. The day began with a schoolwide read-aloud of Every Good Thing by Derek Barnes - a celebration of the strengths and uniqueness in every child - and continued with engaging, hands-on sessions with community presenters.
“Our Leader in Me habit of the month is ‘Sharpen the Saw,’ which encourages students to care for their mind, body, heart, and soul,” said Ms. Nicky Sayre, Parkside’s school counselor. “Today was about helping our panthers find that passion. As a school counselor, I strive to help students see themselves in a positive light and realize that each and every one of them has something special to offer this world.”
From martial arts demonstrations to music and dance showcases, students had the chance to interact directly with organizations that align with their personal interests - many for the very first time.
“I am so excited to be a part of the great things that are happening at Parkside Elementary,” said Ms. Lauren Mongada, teacher and co-organizer of the event. “I’m incredibly grateful for the community members who took the time to share information about their organizations and clubs with our students. Their involvement opens doors to new interests, inspires curiosity, and shows our kids that learning extends far beyond the classroom walls.”
The event exemplified Parkside’s mission to develop leadership and self-confidence in every student by fostering strong partnerships between families, schools, and the surrounding community.
